広島大学は、G7広島サミット(2023年5月18–21日
, 広島市開催)に向けて、日本でプラネタリーヘルスを牽引している5大学とともにプラネタリーヘルス大学間パネルを開催いたしました。シンポジウムでは、2021年10月に出さ
れた「プラネタリーヘルスに関するサンパウロ宣言」で推奨されている超学際融合研究をより一層具体的に推進するため、既存の教育システムや実践研究事例を共有し、大学が地域社会で果たすべき役割について議論をいたしました。シンポジウムへは約15カ国53機関からの参加があり、プラネタリーヘルスの機運の高まりを感じるとともに、今後のさらなる超学際融合教育・研究基盤構築が喫緊の課題であることを認識いたしました。最後に、本シンポジウムでの議論は、「広島プラネタリーヘルス宣言 2023： “大いなる転換期における平和の希求：社会と共に歩むプラネタリーヘルス科学のための教育と研究”」として提言をまとめ、宣言が出されました。本宣言文は広島市平和記念公園に届いた折り鶴で再生された紙に印刷し、パネルデスカッション参加の先生方が代表として署名いたしました。(Japanese: https://www.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/news/76843)

“大いなる転換期における平和の希求：社会と共に歩むプラネタリーヘルス科学のための教育と研究”
世界は現在、気候変動、生物多様性の喪失、環境汚染、紛争をはじめとする地球規模の諸課題に直面しており、私たちは「大いなる転換期（Great Transition）」を迎えています。この転換は、既存の枠組みを超えた新しい科学的アプローチが必要とされ、大学にもその役割が求められています。プラネタリーヘルスに関するサンパウロ宣言でも、研究者が社会と共に超学際的なアプローチをとることが呼びかけられています。本シンポジウムでも、人の健康に加え、社会システムおよび生態系の健康およびウェルビーイングを包括的に捉えるプラネタリーヘルス実現のために、教育・学際研究基盤構築が喫緊の課題であることが改めて確認されました。
私たちは、本シンポジウムを通じて、各大学が有する知見を融合し、プラネタリーヘルス教育・研究基盤の構築を促進することを目指します。そして、平和を希求し、人々のくらしの中からも解決策を見出し、「プラネタリーヘルスにおける社会と共に歩む科学」を追求・実践することで、「大いなる転換」を達成することを目指します。この目標を達成するためには、すべての教育・学術機関が参画し、協力して取り組むことが必要です。

Report
In response to the G7 Hiroshima Summit (May 18-21 2023), Hiroshima University, together with five leading planetary health universities in Japan, hosted the University Panel Symposium on Planetary Health. At the symposium, following the “The São Paulo Declaration on Planetary Health” (October 2021) which calls for researchers and educators to engage in transdisciplinary approaches, we shared existing educational systems and practical research in Planetary Health and discussed the role of universities in society. From 53 organizations in 15 countries, participants joined this symposium. We felt the growing momentum of planetary health, and reconfirm that establishing the transdisciplinary education and research network is urged. Finally, we summarize these discussions as “Hiroshima Planetary Health Declaration 2023: The Pursuit of Peace under the Great Transition: Education and Research for Planetary Health Science with Society “. Then, this declaration was issued. This declaration was printed on paper recycled from origami cranes (Orizuru) delivered to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and signed by the moderator and panelists of the panel discussion as representatives. “The Pursuit of Peace under the Great Transition: Education and Research for Planetary Health Science with Society “
We are now facing a “Great Transition” in tackling various global issues, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental pollution, and conflicts. Educational and academic institutes are required to take on the challenge of new scientific approaches that go beyond existing ordinary thinking. The São Paulo Declaration on Planetary Health calls for researchers and educators to engage in transdisciplinary approaches with society. We reconfirm through this symposium that establishing the transdisciplinary education and research network is urged to achieve the mission of Planetary Health, supporting the health and well-being of humans, social systems, and ecosystems.
Based on our discussion in this symposium, we integrate each institute’s knowledge on our mission, contributing to constructing a research and education foundation for Planetary Health. We aim to seek peace, find solutions with people in society, and achieve a ” Great Transition” by pursuing and practicing “Science with society in planetary health”. We call on all educational and academic institutions to work together to achieve this goal.
